Milestone through the Centuries

Since 1887, the forerunners of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation has demonstrated our commitment to deliver quality medical and health services based on the Love of Jesus, and the philosophi of serving with “Compassionate Love” over the Centuries

Nethersole Dispensary was set up in one of the rooms of the London Missionary Society’s Tai Ping Shan Chapel

The first Fundraising Campaign of Alice Memorial Hospital

Sir Kai Ho Kai generously made a donation for the building of the Alice Memorial Hospital, introducing western medicine to local Chinese. In the same year, Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese was established, pioneering local medical training. The committee members of the new medical school included Rev. Dr. J. Chalmers, Dr. Patrick Manson and Sir James Cantlie. Alice Memorial Hospital was the teaching hospital for the College. One of that first group of students was Sun Yat-sen

Nethersole Hospital opened as the first hospital providing nurses training

Alice Memorial Maternity Hospital opened as the first maternity hospital in Hong Kong and provided the first midwives training in Hong Kong

Ms. Ho Miu Ling, elder sister of Sir Kai Ho Kai, sponsored the construction of a new Hospital, bearing her name as “Ho Miu Ling Hospital” and located in Breezy Path

Introduced the diagnostic X-ray system in Asia

First hospital introducing antenatal check up and postnatal care for the mother and the baby, forerunner of effective maternity and child health service

Religious work in the wards was undertaken by a designated staff. Chaplaincy Service has been introduced in the Hospital in 1980’s. Chaplains were appointed to provide pastoral care, counselling and emotional support to staff, patients and their family members.

The three hospitals, located at the junction of Bonham Road and Breezy Path, were amalgamated to become the “Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital” (AHNH) which was incorporated by Ordinance under the name of “The Executive Committee of The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital”

First hospital adopting the Uni Medical Record System in Hong Kong

Providing volunteer-operated tuck shop service advocating the spirit of volunteerism

Formal community nursing training took place in the Hospital

Assisted in the planning and commissioning of the United Christian Hospital (UCH) in Kwun Tong, which put into practice “Hospital without walls” through the “Kwun Tong Community Health Project”

The Nursing School at the Hospital moved to the UCH compound with an official name of the Nethersole School of Nursing, under UCH’s management. It continued to attract the graduates to serve in both hospitals

Appointment of Chaplain to provide pastoral care to patients and their family members

Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital became one of the public hospitals under the management of the Hospital Authority

The Hospital at Bonham Road decanted to and assisted in the commissioning of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) in Chai Wan

Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital (AHNH) was relocated to Tai Po, promoting the design of an intelligent building with therapeutic healthscape and equipping with the most number of day beds among public hospitals at that time

Established United Christian Nethersole Community Health Service (UCNCHS) with sister organization, United Christian Medical Service, advocating healthy lifestyle towards the goal of “Health for All”

With the joint efforts of the Council for World Mission, the CWM/Nethersole Fund was established with the objectives of spreading the love of Christ and the spirit of sharing by subsidizing the projects and services in Hong Kong and China in areas of evangelism, medical and health, education and social service

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) courses were introduced to train professional chaplains and committed volunteers. In 1999, the CPE courses attained international standard – accredited by the supervisors of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education in USA and recognized as a role model for the Asia Pacific Region

Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Nursing Home (ANNH) in Kowloon Bay was inaugurated, one of the six new nursing homes pioneered by the Hong Kong Government, providing long-term medical and nursing care to the elderly

Nethersole Outreaching Rehabilitation Mission (NORM) piloted the home-based rehabilitation service in Tai Po providing outreaching rehabilitation to the hospital discharged patients and the needy in the community

The Nethersole School of Nursing merged with the Department of Nursing of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in continuation of promoting nursing education and training

The Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education (NICHE) was established to serve the carers through training and education, culture promotion activities, seminars and exchange programmes, research and publication, etc.

Managed the United Christian Nethersole Care Home at Kwan Tong owned by our sister organization, the United Christian Medical Service, through Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Social Service Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary company of our organization. It is a self-financed nursing home providing long-term and short-term residential care to the persons in need. It ceased service in April 2017.

The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation Ordinance (C hapter 1181) was enacted. The organization continues and is committed to the provision of quality health care under the new corporate name of “Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation”, in place of The Executive Committee of the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital
