Chaplaincy Service Report
Art in the Hospital
In Hong Kong, most of the mortuaries at public hospitals are located on the bottom floor of the hospital and has always made people feel gloomy and cold. Mortuary is where dead bodies are stored temporarily prior to be claimed by families for after-death arrangements, In fact, "death" is often a taboo no matter which era or culture. Certainly, if death is the end of life, separation from loved ones is undoubtedly sad. However, if we believe death is the beginning of eternal life, we may then embrace death with a new attitude.
In 2019, a group of volunteer leaders suggested painting the wall outside the mortuary of PYNEH to add some colours to the area. Rev. William W.L. LAM, Chief Chaplain of PYNEH, was much moved and offered himself to be the painter of the mural after deliberation with the management of Hospital. In 2021, the mural was completed.
Dr. Pamela M.K. LEUNG, Dr. Chi-chung LUK and Ms. Julie S.N. LI took photo with Rev. William W.L. LAM in front of the mural outside the Mortuary
The mural has three main images: 1) Sunflower represents the light of life; 2) Bird of Paradise represents the hope of life; 3) The Tree of Life represents the blessing of life. We hope that the families of the deceased may find comforts, hope and blessings when they see the mural on the way of sending the body to the mortuary.
Sunflower, Bird of Paradise and The Tree of Life were printed on the mural
