The Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Y.P. SOO,
JP
Chairman
A rising trend of an ageing population in the next 20 to
30 years in Hong Kong is definitely a great challenge to
us as a healthcare service provider. There will be high
demand for quality elderly care in our society. As early as
1999, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation
(Foundation) has commenced elderly service at the
Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Nursing Home (ANNH) in
Kowloon Bay, and later in 2007, we started to operate the
United Christian Nethersole Care Home (UCNH). Inherited
with the traditional serving philosophy of“Compassionate
Love” and “Holistic Care”, our dedicated staff team takes
care of the elderly whose conditions are getting frail. At
a glance, the ANNH has by now served the community
for 15 years. In 2014, a series of commemorative events
were held in which community leaders, residents and their
family members, and our staff were invited to witness the
growth journey of ANNH at her 15
th
Anniversary.
Providing reliable and high quality medical and nursing
service is definitely a core value already internalized by
each staff member of the two Hospitals. This is also a
common goal that we have endeavoured to achieve. With
the trust and unwavering support from the community,
Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital (AHNH) and Pamela
Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) moved
forward in a stable pace. We are much encouraged that
both Hospitals attained remarkable achievements in
the aspects of service quality, employee relations and
environment management in the past year.
The two Hospitals excelled in various services, as
assured by external evaluation. AHNH completed the
Organization-Wide Survey (OWS) of Hospital Accreditation
Programme in May 2014, and received full accreditation
status of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards
for four years. Meanwhile, PYNEH was the first public
hospital in Hong Kong to complete the second OWS of
Hospital Accreditation in June 2014. It proved that AHNH
and PYNEH sustained a quality and safe medical service
for the health and welfare of our citizens.
Facing the increasing needs and demand for healthcare
of the community, as well as people’s growing expectation
of high quality medical service, the two Hospitals
developed their Clinical Services Plans and provided
additional medical facilities and equipment as based on
the overall direction of the service development of the
Hospital Authority and respective Clusters. Being a keen
supporter and benefactor to society, particularly on
pacifying people in adversity, the Foundation will render
our full support to the development of AHNH and PYNEH,
as in the past.
As for our other direct services under the leadership of
the Chief Executive Officer, strategic planning workshops
were held introducing innovative thinking to review the
service positioning and explore possible road map for
future development. For instance, the Nethersole Institute
of Continuing Holistic Health Education (NICHE) co-
organized talks and seminars with other organizations.
It participated in the curriculum design and teaching
of a few general education courses for a private tertiary
institution, bringing the philosophy of “Holistic Health” to
the community. The rehabilitation service of Nethersole
Outreaching Rehabilitation Mission (NORM) has been
extended to cover the people on outlying islands who
have difficulties in travelling to the hospitals. Other
service units have also recorded remarkable initiatives and
developments, as detailed in the Chief Executive Officer’s
Report and their corresponding service reports.
We strongly believe that, both healthcare and social
service will continue to grow, evolve, and respond
to the ever-changing needs of society. They are also
projects of hope that benefit those who serve and to be
served, with the joint and continuous involvement and
contribution of the stakeholders and the community.
We are also indebted to the continuous support and
encouragement of the government departments
and the Hospital Authority, as well as the local
leaders and community. Thanks should also go to our
Governors, Hospital Governing Committee Members
and our staff colleagues for their unfailing support
and enthusiasm over our work and developments. I
would like to extend my sincere thanks particularly to
Dr. Beatrice CHENG, the former Hospital Chief Executive of
AHNH, who has been posted out since 1 December 2015.
Dr. CHENG is a conscientious, cordial and enthusiastic
advocate of the Nethersole’s motto of “Compassionate
Love” and “Holistic Care”. It is no doubt that under the new
leadership of Dr. Chi-yin MAN and all staff with one heart,
AHNH will continue to blossom, and the Nethersole’s
heritage of joy, love and holistic health will never fail, but
flourish in the community.
My term of office as the Chairman will be completed by
the end of 2015 according to the Constitution. I am much
privileged to have been elected the Chairman in the past
four years, and have worked with all the selfless Governors
and devoted staff. Propelling by the vision of our new
Chairman and the concerted efforts of the Governors and
staff, the Foundation and three sister hospitals are going to
turn over a new leaf. With an outstanding and professional
healthcare team that provides the highest quality of
healthcare service, we shall become an elite healthcare
provider for thepeople of HongKong.WithGod’s guidance
and blessings, the Foundation is marching towards the
130
th
Anniversary and I wish every “Nethersolian” lives in
the joy of God and shares His Love.
